Families Across New England Struggle to Afford Basic Household Furnishings While Tons of Usable Furniture Trashed

More than 9.8 million tons of furniture is thrown away in the United States each year. Half that furniture is in perfectly good condition, yet furniture is the least recycled item in all households. Today, less than one-third of one percent of all discarded furniture is recycled. Furniture is being added to landfills in record amounts, and space in landfills around New England is running out. Meanwhile one in seven families across New England cannot afford to meet their basic household furniture needs. Nearly half of those families without safe, adequate furniture have children.
