The Problem

Families Across New England Struggle to Afford Basic Household Furnishings While Tons of Usable Furniture Trashed

More than 9.8 million tons of furniture is thrown away in the United States each year. Furniture is the least recycled item in all households. Only one-tenth of one percent of all discarded furniture is recycled. Furniture is being added to landfills in “record numbers” and is a “big problem.” Meanwhile families across New England cannot afford to meet their basic household furniture needs. Nearly half of those without furniture are children.
